Montecalvo Rejected for Position
A longtime selectman and Finance Committee member was passed over last night by the Board of Selectmen, which named two people to the Financial Planning Task Force.

Philip D. Simmons, 271 Marston Road, were unanimously named the two at-large members of the panel, which will advise selectmen on the budget during at least fiscal 2011 and 2012. Two selectmen, two Finance Committee members, one School Committee member and Town Manager Theodore D. Kozak will also be on the task force.

Selectmen voted 3-2 against naming former selectman, Finance Committee member and Shrewsbury School Department Administrator Joseph Montecalvo to the task force. He was also interim town manager in Northbridge and Millbury.

Mr. Montecalvo, who said earlier this year he wasn’t a strong supporter of the task force, was defeated at this year’s annual town election by James Athanas, who, along with Selectmen James Marzec and Daniel Nolan voted last night against appointing him to the task force.

After the vote, Selectman Charles Ampagoomian, who voted for Mr. Montecalvo along with Selectman Thomas J. Melia III, angrily put his glasses on the table in front of him and shook his head sideways.

“You better believe I’m mad,” he said before the panel went into executive session. “They did the town and him a disservice. It’s a slap in the face. He’s got more experience than all three of them put together.”
